Sheryl Crow is passing on her wisdom to a new generation of musicians.
At Friday’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, the singer-songwriter, 61, revealed some important advice he gave Olivia Rodrigo. The couple opened the show by singing Crow’s 1996 hit “If It Makes You Happy,” before Crow was introduced by his friend Laura Dern.
“I said, ‘If you could write one sentence every day about what happened that day, because one day you’re going to look back (on) this, and try to remember all the things,'” Crow said. Entertainment Tonight for his interview with Rodrigo, 20.
“The other thing (I told him) is that he should just stay at work and not talk,” he continued. “That’s a big deal.”
Crow said it was “really good” to work with Rodrigo, who released his second album The intestines on September 8. “I mean, you know, I have to give him a little boost, because he’s got a new record (out)…” he told the outlet. “I know how hard a second record is, sophomore. You compete with the success of your first record, and you nail it.”

During the appearance it is open The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, the “Soak Up the Sun” singer called Rodrigo “the real deal.”
“You are precious,” she said High School Music: Music: Series alum. “He’s a great songwriter.”
The Grammy winner also noted that Rodrigo seems to be taking his meteoric rise in the music world for granted, saying he “seems untouched by (fame).”
“He’s so cool. (Rodrigo) asked me to do this thing when he came to Nashville. So I texted him and said, ‘Hey, can you do the Rock Hall with me?’ And he’s like, ‘I’d like, I’d be more honored,'” he added of their latest collaboration.
At the Hall of Fame ceremony, Rodrigo shared his highest praise for Crow. In a special video compilation celebrating Crow’s career, the “Vampire” singer touched on Crow’s unique songwriting skills, citing a favorite line from “If It Makes You Happy” where he sings, “Pick the mold off the bread and give it a French. Spread it again.”

Rodrigo and Crow appeared on stage together in September at the legendary Nashville venue The Bluebird Cafe. During that time, they performed a more stripped-down version of “If It Makes You Happy” to the audience.
Rodrigo was thrilled with the turnout, writing on Instagram at the time, “Squeeze me! sing one of my favorite songs of all time @sherylcrow!!!! what an honor!!!!”

At Friday’s event, Crow was honored alongside several other music legends including Missy Elliott, Chaka Khan and Willie Nelson – and she had her biggest fans by her side. Her two sons, Wyatt, 16, and Levi, 13, made a rare red carpet appearance to help their mom celebrate her career milestone.
