Microsoft Edge can get the same Windows 11 ‘get updates fast’ option – be careful to use it

Microsoft is bringing a change to Edge – or at least in testing – that will look very familiar to Windows 11 users.

As noted by frequent source of browser leaks on X (formerly Twitter), Leopeva64, there is a new option in the Canary branch of Edge testing that allows you to ‘Get the latest Microsoft Edge updates quickly.’

It’s disabled by default, and note that not everyone has it. A reply to the tweet above from another Canary tester notes that it’s not in their Edge build. However, that’s not common with brand new features in early testing – Microsoft is likely to release it to a small selection of Edge testers to begin with, and later, open it up to other people.

In Windows 11, back in May 2023, you may remember that Microsoft added the option to ‘Get the latest updates as soon as they become available,’ putting you first in line for feature updates.

This, then, would seem to be the same conversion for those who are determined to get the new Edge functionality before others.

Analysis: Weighing the pros and cons

Of course, the price of getting the hottest new features in the press is that you’re more likely to get things wrong. That’s why you should be careful about pulling this option, either in Windows 11, or the Edge browser (finally).

You might think that if this capability was introduced in the finished version of Edge, any future features would have been tested – and you’d be right, naturally. But being an early adopter of even software releases and updates can put you first in line for exposure to forces not detected through Microsoft’s QA processes and testing channels.

Remember, we say ‘when’ this is introduced, when we should say ‘if’ we are strictly speaking – any idea in the test can be dropped. Although given this option in Windows 11 already, we can not see any reason why Microsoft does not want to push it to Edge.

If it appears, just think about the pros and cons, and whether you really need to be at the head of the line for Edge features – additions that Microsoft has been thinking about lately, in its effort to make Edge even better. web browser – or that you are a very cautious person who can live without any (admittedly very small) risks.
