CBSSports.com Writers Matchday 3 – Tuesday’s picks
Milan vs. PSG
by Francesco Porzio
One to watch: Rafael Leao vs. Achraf Hakimi – This will be one of the most interesting matchups to watch at the San Siro. Rafael Leao has not been in good form recently and needs to react against the French side, while Hakimi returns to his old hometown where he played with Inter and where he won the 2020-21 Scudetto under Antonio Conte.
Most scoring chances: Kylian Mbappe – All eyes will be on the French star who needs an important game in Milan. Mbappe has scored two goals in the opening three Champions League games of the season, and has scored ten goals in ten games so far in French Ligue 1.
Man of the match: Ousmane Dembele – The former FC Barcelona player has started the season well but has yet to score in the Champions League this year. In the match between PSG and AC Milan he saw one goal disallowed, but his performance is improving game by game.
Match prediction: AC Milan 2, PSG 2 – AC Milan desperately need to avoid defeat against PSG as Stefano Pioli’s side have lost three of their last four games and only managed a draw against Napoli. The Rossoneri need to react and a loss to PSG would once again mean the end of their Champions League campaign.
CBSSports.com Writers Matchday 3 – Wednesday’s Picks
Arsenal-Sevilla
One match to watch: Mikel Arteta takes on the officials – The Arsenal manager is coming hot on the heels of Saturday’s controversial winner against Newcastle, which was the subject of three separate VAR reviews in the space of four minutes. After that, Arteta presented a stunning display while in charge of the game, a man who is usually not afraid to give the referees a piece of his mind, raising his anger to the 11. That naturally brings backlash, but will the Arsenal boss be on the phone? Probably not but it will be fun to watch.
Most scoring chances: Gabriel Martinelli – Arsenal’s defensive strength is such that you won’t rush to pick any Sevilla player as a goalscorer but the hosts are not the same attacking force they once were and may struggle to find goals themselves. They will get at least one though and Martinelli seems as good a bet as anyone to score.
Man of the Match selection: William Saliba – The reason why you can confidently say that it is difficult to find a goalscorer in Sevilla’s side is Saliba, a defender with authority and composure beyond his years. He has a growing role in Arsenal’s possession game and for him at the back it is a big task to get a shot at David Raya’s goal.
Similar assumptions: Arsenal 2, Sevilla 0 – This may not be pretty or exciting for a minute but it says a lot about the recent progress of the Gunners that you can confidently suggest that they will blow the whistle in the Champions League against such a respected side.
